I expect if you hunt around a good second-hand deal is possible the 500 PS.ĮDIT - I have tracked down a 100-400 S and am buying it as an additional lens for its all-round flexibility and compared the 500 PF its relatively compact size. The two S mount competitors although still in short supply give the 500 PS very strong competition. 5 is state with improved VR at a similar price point 500 PF. The 100-400 zoom will be attractive to many photographers for its versatility and close focus ability at a lower price point. With the 500, AF autofocus works well with either a 1.4 or 2x converter on an ML body though as there are no cross type sensors on ML it can help a lot if there is something that AI can recognise to focus on. One attraction of the 500 PF is it takes you straight to 500 mm without a converter - though this makes the front element rather large at 95 mm. Secondhand price is probably challenging as the excellent 100-400 S is £2,600 - and the 500 PF new is distinctly more expensive at £3600. The 500 PF is much lighter and much more flexible than your 200-500 and I find optically a little better I have used the 500 PF since it was launched four years ago and I have no intention of selling it.
